Cerrena unicolor, also known as mossy maze polypore, is a basidiomycete fungus in the Polyporaceae family. C. unicolor causes white rot on the surface of hardwoods and is globally distributed. Lacasse enzymes are produced at very high levels when C. unicolor is grown in liquid cultures in the presence of Cu ions and aromatic compounds (J. Ind. Microbiol. Biotech. 2010, 37, 1091) which act as inducers for the laccase production. Sequencing of C. unicolor will allow it to be used as a model to understand the regulation of laccase production in basidiomycete fungi and to provide routes to produce laccases at large-scale for industrial applications.
