Desulfuromonas acetoxidans DSM 684 converts free elemental sulfur to sulfide. Interesting issues are how the bacteria acquire the elemental sulfur granules and transport the sulfur for conversion to sulfide. Like the sulfate reducers (see D. desulfuricans), sulfide production is toxic and can have important economic consequences. Anaerobic oxidation of acetate, ethanol and propanol by reduction of elemental sulfur to sulfide.
