Jannaschia sp.
strain CCS1 is a member of the Roseobacter lineage (alpha-Proteobacteria),
an ecologically relevant taxon of marine bacteria abundant in coastal and
open ocean surface waters. CCS1 is an aerobic anoxygenic phototroph
(AAnP), using bacteriochlorophyll a to harvest energy from light
without formation of oxygen. AAnPs have recently been found in ocean surface
waters, where they make up a significant fraction of the marine bacterioplankton
community, are responsible for a share of the oceanic photosynthetic electron
transport flux, and have important implications for the ocean carbon cycle.
Jannaschia CCS1
was isolated from Pacific coastal waters on low-nutrient seawater medium. It
is motile, grows slowly, and like other marine AAnPs, produces bacteriochlorophyll a when
grown in the dark. |
