This filamentous sheath-forming bacterium grows heterotrophically and oxidizes both iron and manganese; it deposits Mn- and Fe-oxides on its sheath and the sheath itself has been shown to sequester other heavy metals making it of interest in terms of its potential as a bioremediation organism. |
